Tollefson, Pool, and Pina, Repeat at the Rebels XC Challenge

The Rebels XC Challenge kicked off the local adult cross country season yesterday in Granite Park, and competitors enjoyed picture-perfect weather and a challenging course.

The winding trails through Granite Park do not yield a particularly speedy course, but as typical for a PAUSATF cross country race the times were fast and the competition fierce.

The event stuck with the usual PA cross country format, with separate races for women, masters men, and open men, with the women running 5K and the men 7K.

This Week in the Marathon

We are in the heart of the fall marathon season and there are many stories to choose from! Here is a sample from around the world.

Major

This past weekend was the Bank of America Chicago Marathon where Ryan Hall was due to a) win, b) set an American Record, and/or c) set a course record.

Unfortunately for Ryan Hall, there were some other fast guys out there on the course, too.  After hanging with the lead pack for 14 miles, Hall faded to 5th (no small thing there!) and Kenyan Moses Mosop was the one to (barely) set a new course record of 2:05:37.

Liliya Shobukhova of Russia was the women’s three-peat champion, with a smoking fast 2:18:20. This is the 4th fastest marathon time ever by a woman.

Buffalo Stampede!

Since the dawn of time*, runners have gathered on the 1st Sunday after Labor Day to run the Buffalo Stampede. The race has grown and shrunk again over the years but it remains a “must do race” for the Sacramento running community.

Many locals think of it as the kick-off race for the build up to the California International Marathon, and the weather for this year’s event could hardly have been more perfect.

Several years ago, the Buffalo Chips added a second, non-competitive race for slower runners–now known as the Parrott Migration.
