Fast and Free at the Susan B Anthony 5K
A big crowd of speedy women (and a few men) lined up in River Park this morning for the Buffalo Chips’ Susan B Anthony 5K.
The race, founded in 1976, is the region’s oldest women’s race.
Over the years, the times have waxed and waned, but this year the top times were pretty brisk.
The winner this year was Saori Imamura, 19, of Chiba, Japan, with a time of 16:37.
The runner up was Miki Kobayashi, 21, also of Chiba, Japan, finishing in 17:08.
Finishing 3rd was Natalie Malligan, 28, of San Francisco, who completed the course in 18:24.
Along with the usual crowd, it was especially nice to see a number of kids racing the distance, including Sophia Karperos, 13, and Alyssa Barnes, 13, who finished 5th and 6th overall, in 18:54 and 19:44, respectively.
I hope we see them again next year!
