Mary Cain wins!

The USA Indoor National Championships wrapped up this weekend in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and the star of the show was a high school junior.

Sunday, Mary Cain became the first high school athlete to win an indoor national title since Allyson Felix won the 200 meters in 2003.

Cain’s winning time of 5:05.68 was not particularly fast, but she led from the start and the final laps were blistering fast. Treniere Moser finished second in 5:06.55. You can watch the race yourself here.

Meanwhile, Lea Wallace, a former Sacramento State standout, now running for the Sacramento Running Association’s Elite Team, finished fourth in Sunday’s women’s 800 meters event.

Wallace posted a 2:04.11 finish, trailing only winner Ajee Wilson (2:02.64), Chanelle Price (2:02.93) and Bethany Praska (2:03.57).

Wallace ran the third-fastest time (2:05.10) in Saturday’s preliminary round. Her SRA teammate Dominique Jackson ran 2:08.97 in the preliminary round but did not advance to the final.

You can watch Wallace run the 800 meter finals here.

Some coverage should also be given to Davis High School alum Chelsea Reilly. A Cal 2012 graduate, now residing in the Bay Area, who also claimed the 10K title in 2012, won the 3000 at this meet with a dramatic finish.
