The Bee Weighs in on the Proposed Federal Facility on the Parkway

September 22, 2011 By: John Blue Category: General Running News, Parkway Updates

Does a 200,000 square foot office building belong here?

The Bee weighed in today on the proposal to build a gigantic office building adjacent to the Nimbus Fish Hatchery.

They point out that the other sites being considered are superior in every way (cheaper, safer, consistent with existing land use, etc.).

These sites include an existing building at Mather Field (the building would need to be expanded and improved), as well as a property at Kilgore Road and Sunrise Boulevard.

If you ever run, walk or ride through the American River Parkway near Hazel Avenue, you should be paying attention.

The US Bureau of Reclamation, National Weather Service and California Department of Water Resources are considering siting a new, 200,000 square foot, Joint Operations Center on property along the American River Parkway near Nimbus Dam and Hazel Avenue.

The construction and siting of this facility, along with 800 parking spaces and 600 workers, would negatively impact our use of the parkway for recreation and bicycle commuting. The proposed site would be squeezed between Gold Point Lane and the bike trail adjacent to the Fish Hatchery. (Google Map)

Over the years, many of us wanting to start our runs along the river at Hazel Avenue have been migrating from the parking lot at the Nimbus Fish Hatchery to the parking lot at the CSUS Aquatic Center

Even though I’ve never seen the lot full except for during boat races (when they charge), it looks like that will no longer be an option as the Aquatic Center staff will begin restricting parking to their clients and staff.

According to the Aquatic Center website:

General Public that wishes to recreate i.e.; swim, paddle their own boats, picnic, should do so at the Nimbus Flats State Park. The Aquatic Center parking lot (inner & outer lot) is reserved for Aquatic Center Patrons.

They are in the process of installing signs indicating this policy and staff at the Aquatic Center stated they would have employees posted at the entrance of their parking area directing folks away to the Fish Hatchery or Nimbus Flats–probably starting September 1st.
