On Saturday morning, a couple hundred of the usual suspects showed up at the Sacramento Sheriff’s Training Academy for the Kaleo 5K.

Sacramento speedster Mike Styczynski made a rare appearance in a local race and ran away with the win in 16:40. The second man in was Folsom’s Daniel Kinsella, who finished in 17:06. The third man in was Sacramento’s Geoff Butler, who finished a couple minutes back in 19:51.

The winning woman in the 5K was 16-year-old Jillian Brown, of Sacramento, who finished in 20:37. Next in was Sacramento’s Christi Cantle, with a 21:45. Rounding out the top-three was Wendy Schmitt, also of Sacramento, who finished in 21:57.

Complete results are here.

If running up mountains is more your thing, then you should have been at Squaw Valley on Saturday for the Squaw Mountain Run.

This race always intrigues me because it is a short race–3.6 miles–and the winner usually runs around 8:20 per mile. I could do that! Well, maybe.

I think John Trent, of Reno, puts it best when he says:

Even though it’s so difficult you kind of start lapsing into unconsciousness and start seeing God at the top, I love this race.

The overall winners were JP Donovan, of Incline Village, who made the 2,000 foot climb in 29:52, and Kristen Walstad, of Alta, who finished in 35:52.

The top local appears to be Mark Lantz, of Gold River, who won his M45 age division, and finished 12th overall, in 35:32. I’m not sure who the top local woman was (they don’t have cities listed in the results) but Rena Lantz (nee Schumann) turned in a solid 46:19!

I’m not sure if anyone saw God at the top, but I heard there was beer.

Complete results are here. (PDF) Once again, it was good to see the Pigg family was well represented!

The Squaw Mountain Run is not for sissies.

Kaleo’s Run was a really neat event, with the option to run (or walk) with your own K9 and a prize for the first human/dog team. There was also a 1 mile walk with your dog for those who didn’t feel like going 3.1.

On a personal note, it was my first 5K under 20 minutes, so a good day for me! My wife also got a new PR.

I agree with Geoff’s comment above. Kaleo’s 5k is a great event. Well organized, nice course, and unique entertainment with the Sheriff K9 demonstrations and ability to run with your dog. This was the 3rd year of the event and hopefully it keeps growing.
