Parkway Updates–Updated!

Workers repair the levee under the trail near the I Street Bridge (SRN Photo)

There are a couple of projects on the American and Sacramento River Parkway trails to keep an eye out for.

Just upstream from the I Street Bridge, where the Army Corps of Engineers had repaired a bit of erosion along the levee, contractors are scheduled to begin the installation some needed railing along the river side.

This should not result in a detour, but it will likely require one lane to be closed in this already congested, shoulderless stretch of trail.

In a few weeks, there should be a detour near Campus Commons Golf Course. From the Sacramento Regional Parks website:

Bicycle and pedestrian traffic on the Jedediah Smith recreational bike trail, between Mile 6 and 7, on the American River Parkway will be detoured to the “lower loop” trail that runs between the Campus Commons Golf Course and drainage outflow east of the Cal Expo Floodplain.  The Northrop Avenue access will also be closed during this time.  The detour is necessary to allow the Corps of Engineers to strengthen a small section of levee where a large sewer pipe passes through it.

Construction is scheduled for August 22nd through October 15th. Of course, there are no guarantees regarding the date of this project.

If it sounds familiar, that’s because I warned you about it earlier when it was scheduled for July 15th. I’ll try to keep you apprised of schedule changes.

And lastly, alert reader Phil O. reports that there are now mile markers painted signs on the levee trail along the Sacramento River Parkway. These will be especially handy the next time Discovery Park is flooded and all the downtown runners are all shunted along the Sacramento River instead of the American River.

The mile markers start at “0” at the Jibboom Street Bridgeand count up as you head downstream along the Sacramento River.

  1. John,

    Thanks for all this.

The mile markers are not painted but are actually road signs beginning at Jimboom Street Bridge and heading south. I went as far as Sutterville today and it was posted the entire way.

As for the I Street project, I should have word as to went that’s going to be done the early part of the week. It’s being done by the parks people…not sure if it’s county or state. Let you know as soon as I find out.

    Cheers!

  2. The mileage signs south of Jibboom seem to continue south of Sutterville, as the same signs appear on the paved portion of the levee path between Garcia Bend Park and the new water intake at Freeport. However, I don’t know what course the mileage tracks for the portions of the bike path not on accessible and/or paved levee stretches such as the Little Pocket and the northern part of the Pocket. Does anyone know?

I was wondering this myself and looking for signs along Riverside Blvd after the trail dumps you out after La Rivage. (Didn’t see any.)
